First they came for the mammals…

First they came for the mammals, and I did not speak out— because I wanted the meat and those big animals scared me.

Then they came for the trees, and I did not speak out—because I wanted the wheat, and roads and parking lots and factories.

Then they came for the insects, and I did not speak out – no, I cheered because creepy-crawlies gross me out and sting me.

Then they came for the frogs, and I did not speak out – I didn’t even notice, I was too busy watching TV.

Then they came for the fishes, and I did not speak out—because there were so many fishes in the sea, there would always be so many fishes in the sea.

Then they came for the oceans, and I did not speak out—because the oceans are so big we can dump whatever we want into them.

Then, oh, then…..

There were no more mammals and not enough trees.

No more fishes, instead only dying oceans and rivers.

No more forests and so very, very few animals.

Too much carbon dioxide and not enough oxygen.

So then they came for me, but I was them.

Will we let our planet grow lonely and die?
